We place few puppies, and with care. Here is how an application works at Moonrise.

Where things stand

Next litter: not yet planned

Our very first litter will be planned with great care, only once every health, maturity and temperament criterion is met. No date has been set at this time.

The process

  1. Get to know the breed

Learn about the Basenji and make sure it suits your lifestyle. Our Basenji page and Blog are a good place to start.

  2. Fill out the form

The application form is shared on our Facebook page when applications open.

  3. Join our family pool

No traditional waiting list. We select a few families each year, with no order of priority and no guaranteed timeline.

  4. Matching & contract

Each puppy is matched by temperament. Official CKC non-breeding contract, drafted with a professional, with spay/neuter around 12 months.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a waiting list?

Not in the usual sense. We select a few families each year who form our “pool of potential families”. There is no order of priority and no guaranteed timeline, because we match the best possible puppy with each family.

How do I apply?

The application form is shared on our Facebook page when applications open. Follow us to be notified.

Are your puppies sold with breeding rights?

No. Our puppies go home on an official Canadian Kennel Club non-breeding contract with spay/neuter required around 12 months. The contract, drafted with a professional, protects both the kennel and the family. It is shared once a family is accepted.

Is the Basenji hypoallergenic?

“Hypoallergenic” means less allergenic, not allergen-free. Basenjis still shed and have dander and saliva. Read our article on the topic and spend time with Basenjis before committing.

Can a Basenji stay home alone?

Not for long. It’s a pack dog that doesn’t cope well with long periods alone. It also needs 45 minutes to an hour of exercise, something to chew, and some mental stimulation every day.

Show Home

Interested in conformation?

A Show Home takes on a dog to exhibit it in conformation, so the dog stays intact.

We are open to it, but it calls for an in-depth conversation: your goals, your show experience, and the agreement that would frame it. Write to us to talk it over.

Before you apply

The Basenji isn’t for everyone.

Independent, primitive, with a strong prey drive and little tolerance for being alone: take the time to really get to know the breed before committing.
